Tenement alley with hanging laundry

Tenement alley with hanging laundry

Since we had split up while downtown, I was anxious to see what happened to Doddle; so I waited patiently for him while looking out a window at the end of the hallway. Evidently, he had gotten busted; because I saw two detectives escorting him back to the tenement. After becoming scared stiff, I didn’t hesitate to become a lamest, and go on the lam.

So I ran to the other end of the hallway, stepped out onto the fire escape, and climbed toward the roof. Numerous fire escapes were attached to the buildings, which were also littered with laundry hanging from lines across the alleyway.
While scurrying up the steps, I could hear multiple voices in Spanish from kids leaning out windows chattering and expressing excitement over my resolve to escape. Some were pointing at me; plus I heard the rhythmic sounds of Afro-Caribbean music and dogs barking.
Once I reached the top, I observed a pair of Latin lovers in a romantic embrace and necking. Also, there was some dude all hunched over leaning on a wall, who looked to be in a deep nod. Needless to say, he was most likely one of the city’s junkies, which numbered in the hundreds of thousands.
While peering over the side of the building and looking down, I saw a detective looking out of our window to see if we had dope dangling from a string. He then looked up and saw a glimpse of me as I pulled back. “The roof,” are the words he shouted to his partner, which resulted in a chase straight out of some Hollywood production.
So I began to run toward the next building. However, a four to five-foot gap between the buildings halted me. It was too late to run back to the opposite side of the roof where the buildings were adjacent. Fearing the consequences of being hauled back down to the 20th precinct, I figured I’d better keep hot footin’ it. From six stories up, I viewed a trash heap that looked to be several feet deep down below. I gambled that if I didn’t reach the other side and fell, this garbage dump would cushion my fall. I decided to back up, in order to gain a running start; then I leaped over to the next building.
Upon landing on the other side, and rolling on the roof from the momentum, the detectives stepped out onto the roof from the stairway entrance. Taking a brief look back, I noticed the pigs standing at the edge looking down—not wanting to take a chance jumping. Besides, they were a couple of old geezers anyway. I deduced that the reason they didn’t pursue me was because they weren’t as desperate as I was. Once I arrived onto the street after running down the building stairway, I darted to the nearest subway entrance, which was at 66th and Broadway. The video bellow shows a recent view of the ride. As can be seen from the wait time on the train at the station, it was nerve racking for me.

From there I caught one of the BMT Broadway locals back downtown. However, I wished I could’ve taken an express; except they didn’t stop at that station. I then knew what it felt like to be a desperado as I arrived at the Port Authority Bus Terminal to board the next Trailways bus to Philly.

Fortunately I still had the other half of my round trip ticket on me. During the ride out of town, I decided that I didn’t want to play this game anymore, and longed for the comfort of home and my own bed.
